Trauma specialist, facilitator and survivor

I specialise in facilitating trauma informed yoga and movement practices for individuals as well as for incarcerated people and staff in secure facilities and residents in secure hospitals and in-patient facilities. No matter the setting, my intention is to hold a brave space for people to explore their inner and outer experiences safely through the medium of yoga and movement.

As a survivor of trauma, I come to this work with personal experience of the effects of trauma on both my body and mind.  I, like many people who have experienced trauma, tried many different ways to find peace and resolution.  Many of the things I tried were wonderfully helpful, and offered me tools for moving forward.  However, finding trauma informed/sensitive yoga, movement and bodywork practices were like finding a missing piece to a puzzle for me.  I know first hand how powerful movement practices can be in safely moving within and through our journey with trauma.

I am certified to facilitate TCTSY as an adjunctive treatment for developmental and complex trauma, and PTSD. As a facilitator of TCTSY, my practice does (and must always) comply with the IA-TCYST Guidelines on Ethical Practice. I am also  in regular peer-supervision with TCTSY facilitators as guided by David Emerson & Jenn Turner at The Centre for Trauma and Embodiment, Boston USA.

I have completed my course work with Integrated Body Movement Therapy (IMBT) as a somatic movement education and therapist. And work with clients to provide specific movement-based therapy and bodywork.

Yoga and somatics teacher and practitioner

I am passionate about all forms of movement and embodiment, and my practice has been informed by the myriad styles I’ve explored over the past 20 years including Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Hatha, Iyengar and an ‘interesting’ foray into Hot Yoga. I’m grateful to have studied with a variety of inspiring teachers along the way, such as Amy Matthews, Leslie Kaminoff, Donna Farhi, Beverley Nolan, Jane Okondo, Judith Hanson-Lassater, Aki Amori, Kathryn Bruni-Young, Francoise Freedman, Paul Beaumont and David Emerson.

My interest in psychology and philosophy soon drew me to explore the mind-body connection more deeply through mindful and somatic movement, and I haven’t looked back since. As a yoga and movement teacher, I weave an expertise in movement and anatomy with my interest in psychology to help others unravel the relationship between their physical and cognitive experiences. I encourage everyone to work where they are in each moment, to honour the wisdom of the body, and to move in a way that is mindful and authentic. As a trained teacher with the Prison Phoenix Trust, I also teach yoga and movement in prisons and other secure facilities as well as other clinical settings.

Educator and life-long learner

I am a Senior Tutor with Barefoot Body Training, and am honoured to train and mentor yoga teacher trainees, and facilitate trauma informed yoga workshops. I am deeply committed to accessibility and passionate about increasing awareness about trauma through yoga and movement, which is why I also offer bespoke trainings and consulting sessions. I believe I’m a teacher at heart, starting out as a primary school teacher I was drawn to how learning can be facilitated from the ground up. After completing courses in restorative and pregnancy yoga, I began to pursue movement trainings that focused more on supporting the mind-body connection. This led to a more specialised focus on Trauma Sensitive Yoga with the Centre for Trauma and Embodiment at the Justice Resource Institute. I am also currently studying with the Institute for Integrative Bodywork and Movement Therapy (IMBT), and have a special interest in infant movement and development.

My love of learning continues to lead me further down the rabbit hole. The more I expand my knowledge into human movement and the sensory experience, the more I realise I have (and want) to learn.

When I’m not teaching or learning, here are a few things I enjoy:

  • family time with my husband, our two kids, two cats and our dog

  • making a proper mess in the garden (and hoping something delicious or beautiful emerges out of it)

  • delving into a stack of poetry

  • enjoying a good Netflix binge

  • spending time surrounded by people I love (coupled with equal amounts of time in solitude)

  • open water swimming, paddle-boarding and anything else that involves salt water in my hair

  • being wrapped up in a warm blanket on a cool Autumn evening
